James Dondero and Mark Okada co-founded Highlands Capital Management L.P. in 1993. James Dondero who is the president of the organization has over 30 years of experience in the equity and credit markets focusing mainly on distressed and high-yield investments. Under his leadership, Highlands Capital has improved credit-oriented solutions for investors worldwide both retail and institutional. It’s also developed the Collateralized Loan Obligation (CLO) market. Highlands Capital offers a variety of services such as private equity funds, CLOs, REITs, institutional separate accounts, hedge funds and ETFs.

James Dondero attended the University of Virginia, where he graduated with the highest honors in double majors in accounts and finance from the Mclntire School of Commerce. He was qualified for the Certified Managerial Accountant (CMA) and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and earned a right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. He started his career in 1984 as a financial analyst in the JP Morgan Training Program. In 1985, he was employed at American Express as a corporate bond analyst and was later promoted to a portfolio manager. In 1989 to 1993, he worked as a Chief Investment Officer of Protective Life, helping the organization start the GIC branch that brought in over 2 billion dollars.

As a philanthropist, Mr. Dondero has donated millions of dollars to charity organizations dedicated to improving education and lives of the Dallas people through Highlands Capital. The organization donated 2 million dollars to Southern Methodist University that provided exceptional undergraduate students with opportunities to study abroad and access to senior-year internships. It also donated 1 million dollars to the Dallas Zoo to build the Hippo Hut for special education displays and private events. Highlands capital has also donated millions of dollars to Education is Freedom Organization dedicated to helping at-risk youths get college education. They’ve also helped Snowball Express Organization, which is dedicated to bringing happiness to children of fallen military heroes. Other organizations that they’ve given a helping hand include Uplift Education and The Family Place organizations. James Dondero serves on the Executive Board of the Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business. He is also a board member of Jernigan Capita and is the president and chairman of NexPoint Residential Trust Inc. amongst other organizations.
